We should probably be prepared for aquisitions in this market...seems now is the time to buy? Wouldn't surprise me to see ALA go on a buying spree. Would ALA consider a company that currently depends on 50% plus of it's revenue from Nortel?

Meanwhile, Mr. de Prycker declined to comment on speculation that Alcatel may be interested in making a bid for Bookham Technology PLC

I have never heard of Bookham until today. Does anyone have any thoughts regarding this possible purchase?

Thanks, sf

Bookham to Cut Work Force By 15%, as Sales Are Sluggish

A WSJ.COM News Roundup

LONDON -- Bookham Technology PLC plans a reorganization that could lead to a 15% reduction of its work force in the United Kingdom.

Bookham, a U.K.-based maker of fiber-optics equipment, said Thursday that the plan will involve a reduction of 150 staff members, and that it hopes to achieve the cuts through attrition and voluntary redundancies.

The cuts are likely to be concentrated in the company's mini-DIL-manufacturing operations and manufacturing-related engineering positions. Mini-DIL products are used in optical transmission.

In reporting disappointing earnings last month, Bookham said demand has slowed for its mini-DIL products, and that growth in shipments of the products was lower than expected in the fourth quarter due to a reduction in orders from Nortel Networks Corp.

Bookham said Nortel accounted for 51% of total revenue in the fourth quarter, down from 56% in the previous quarter.

Overall, Bookham posted wider fourth-quarter and full-year pretax losses than expected, and warned that slowing demand for mini-DIL products would hit first-half revenue and limit growth through 2001.

Bookham also said it will focus its investments to continue to support its dense wave division multiplexing, or DWDM, products.

The company expects revenues from DWDM products to move from representing about one-third of total revenue in the fourth quarter of 2000 to around two-thirds of revenue in the same period in 2001.
