Etienne favors aggressive style: no losses, 13 knockouts in 19 fights

By ROYCE FEOUR
REVIEW-JOURNAL

Clifford "The Black Rhino" Etienne perhaps best exemplifies the old expression of a boxer who "comes to fight."

The undefeated Etienne will meet Fres Oquendo in a 10-round fight on tonight's America Presents card at Texas Station.

It will be the main undercard fight on the David Tua-Danell Nicholson card, to be televised by Showtime.

Many fighters describe themselves as boxer-punchers, with the boxer part coming first. Etienne, not surprisingly, says he is a puncher-boxer.

"I'm an aggressive fighter," he said.

Etienne, of Baton Rouge, La., is 19-0 with 13 knockouts since turning pro 2 1/2 years ago.

"I like to fight," he said. "I don't like to run around the ring. I like to get down to the nitty-gritty."

Etienne, 31, went the distance in his last bout, taking a 10-round decision over previously undefeated Lawrence Clay-Bey on the undercard of the Nov. 11 heavyweight championship fight between Lennox Lewis and Tua at Mandalay Bay.

But the Etienne-Clay-Bey fight was full of action, far outshining the one-sided Lewis-Tua fight as a lively, entertaining contest.

Etienne got a late start in boxing because he served 10 years in prison in Louisiana for armed robbery.

He stopped his first opponent in 31 seconds and has been coming out punching ever since.

"I don't get paid for overtime," Etienne said of his busy style.

He said two of his favorite fighters while growing up were former champions Sugar Ray Leonard and Muhammad Ali.
However, Etienne said he could really identify with former champions Joe Frazier and Marvin Hagler.

"I see some of me in them," Etienne said.

Don Turner, one of Etienne's trainers, also sees a resemblance to Frazier.

"He's a little bit like Joe Frazier," said Turner, who also trains Evander Holyfield. "He doesn't punch as hard as Frazier. But he has decent power. He gets hit a little less than Joe. He works very hard. I think he is the hardest-working heavyweight around."

J.C. Davis, another Etienne trainer, said: "When he goes into a fight, he gives his all. The only way to stop him is to knock him out or kill him. This is a trait no one can teach."

Etienne said he expects to have to go after Oquendo (19-0), of Chicago.

"I know he is more of a boxer," Etienne said. "He likes to hit and hold. He doesn't like to fight."

Tonight's fight will be Etienne's first on a new contract with Showtime.

Etienne weighed 225 pounds at Thursday's weigh-in, and Oquendo was 221. Tua weighed in at 247 after saying he would be slightly lighter, and Nicholson was 223.

Yep. MmmmHmmm. That's right.
He's gonna be a bloody mess, and he knows it.

Nevertheless, I would absolutely love to see him or anybody clean Sissyboy's clock.

"I'd rather be a coward," De La Hoya said, "than to get knocked out the way Vargas did."

Yep. MmmmHmmm. That's right.

This is going to be a great fight, perhaps, do disprove his
naysayers, Gatti might just pack a little extra punch tomorrow..

It's not as if he's not a worthy opponent, he deserves SOME
credit.. Though, apparently, we all agree e looks ripe for
a slicing..

Yeeee Haaawwwwwww!!!

Ok, so I will put 10 on the Diva and 100 on The Man. Hopefully the $10 bet will ensure that the Diva dives.

The more that the Diva talks, the more I want to see him lose.
