Let us pretend it was possible and we succeeded in removing all hand guns from civilian hands. Would you then advocate disarming the police?

>>>What freedom is the NRA protecting? The freedom for thugs to obtain guns to commit crimes with?

Gun laws will surely keep "thugs" from obtaining guns. Why? Because it is illegal.;-)

The same organization that has consistently blocked any efforts are bringing our gun problem under control?

That is because the NRA has a few folks with brains enough to understand that inanimate objects like guns are not problems, but that people are the problem.

The NRA is not responsible for developing moral citizens. Its interests lay primarily in protecting the rights of moral citizens to own guns.

If you want to fix the gun problem (so called), you'll have to do it at home. Ditto the drug problem.

Well, for starters you can read the Bill of Rights. Any government that can trust its citizens with the right to bear arms can itself be trusted. <<What freedom is the NRA protecting? >> Every major episode of genocide was preceded by a disarmament of the citizenry.

President Bush resigned to make a point against that one statement by somebody who used stronger rhetoric than was needed. Like every large organization, the NRA is a coalition of many different people, and some of them speak out of turn. I disagree with his decision, but he doesn't like brocholi either and I disagree with him on that too. On the whole, he's the best qualified president we've had in this century. Until that unfortunate remark by an NRA person, George H. W. Bush was a life member of the NRA, as was President Reagan, and many distinguished politicians, medal of honor winners, and people who have a higher standard of responsibility than the general populace by far.
