Well, this "box" outside of which you claim social conservatives must think is the box of human biology, and until that changes they will have no alternative but to lobby for permanent monogamous marriage. I think you've built a nice, tight philosophy around this human biological identity thing. It seems logical and internally consistent to me, at least so far as I've observed it. I wouldn't try to disabuse you of any philosophy that works for you and is harmless to others. All I'm saying is that you won't be able to get a consensus on it so prepare for it to keep you warm as society moves in a different direction. That person mentioned this because he saw that civil marriage is increasingly a corruption of real marriage. Yes, and I agree with him. What would you like to do about that? A good idea, but why stop here? Truly, sex itself is the real contract. I agree that there is a contractual underpinning to sex. Now what can we do with that notion? Well, as someone who has practiced true monogamy, I can assure you that it reflects my very human nature...I then find new dimensions to explore within her. The thing has now become mystical. I am happy for you both. A great relationship is a wondrous thing. I have had several, all precious, all producing life-long friends. Maybe mine weren't quite as special as yours, but the curve flattens after a certain number of years and I've had that experience more than once. I wouldn't trade with you and I know you wouldn't trade with me. Let's be happy for each other. I think this is the disconnect between you and I (and between me and many liberals). I don't know why you would label me a liberal. I'm definitely not a social conservative, which is pretty obvious, but I'm no liberal either. I'm just someone who thinks independently about things rather than just accepting what is handed me. You are willing to seek alternatives to something that in my view is not broken in the least and indeed mirrors the very nature of humankind. Johannes, it may not be broken for you, and it may mirror YOUR very nature or human nature as you view it, but it doesn't fit all people of intelligence and good will. It doesn't even seem to fit the majority of people. A voluntary scheme that works for only the few cannot prevail. An involuntary scheme is unsuitable for a free people. Karen
