perfect...i was afraid they had coverered a bunch on this drop... i would expect them to build on their short position if the market rallies form here since they obviously didt think the market was low enough for them to start covering

Wait a minute. Weren't they short 96k last time! That's quite a large drop.

The NDX net short position also dropped very substantially, down 40% or so. Still at nearly -9k short it's still at the very high end of the range -- about what it was 3 or 4 weeks ago. Since we rallied, sort of, after these positions are reported, it's hard to know how much more was covered late this week.
