Well, there have been many totalitarian regimes in history. In fact it was once the norm. For example, most kings were dictators. Were they right or left? Who can say. There were periods of time in Greek and Roman history where the countries were ruled by dictators or oligarchies, were they right or left. Who can say. If we look at the 20 th century we have had at least three right wing dictatorships (I am accepting the popular that they would be considered right wing by most) that come to mind. Franco in Spain, Mussolini in Italy and Hitler in Germany. On the other Hand Russia has had a totalitarian form of government and most people considered it to be leftist. As I believe I stated in another post, I have not noticed that right wing extremists are any more inclined to impose their will on us than are left wing extremists. One of the things we often forget is that any law that is passed is an attempt to impose the moral values of those who support the law on those who do not. I think you could argue that liberals are far quicker to resort to passing a law and more likely to prefer government regulation than most conservatives and therefore it is the liberals who are trying to force us to comply with their view of the good, the true and the beautiful. Of course, within both liberal and conservative camps there are divisions. For example the so called liberterian conservatives are a far different breed than the Traditional conservatives. Libertarian conservatives are the least likely to try to impose their will through government. In fact even though we tend to classify them as conservatives, they are really liberal in the classical sense of the word. On the liberal side, the traditional democrats i.e. those in the mold of a Truman, or Roosevelt or even John Kennedy are a far different breed than let's say Senator Boxer or Feinstein or Al Gore. Trying to label people politically is a hard thing to do. I have known politicans who were considered very conservative, but who supported welfare laws because they could not see the children suffer. Many observers have been amazed by this. This is because they try to fit everyone into a mold. But the fact is we are not that simple. We can't even agree on what makes a person a conservative or a liberal except in the broadest of terms when we get down to specifics it is impossible. Little joe
