In the federalist papers, Madison made it clear that one of the purposes of the Second Amendment was to protect citizens against oppressive government.
Jefferson said something similar. He also thought a new revolution would be necessary every generation to overthrow a once-democratic government that had become oppressive.

In England where few private citizens have weapons, forced entries of homes while people are at home is commmon. In America where many people keep a gun in their home it is not.
This sort of crime was once almost unknown here. It's incidence has increased sharply in the last 20 years.
