Tench: TDP is "Thermal Design Parameter," or something like that. It's the amount of heat dissipation that the cooling system must be designed around. This will obviously be a lot higher than typical power consumption which is used to calculate battery life, and it's a parameter you cannot fudge as much.

(It's Thermal Design Power, btw)

However, according to Intel, the heat dissipation can go above the TDP level. (for an example of this, see the P4 datasheet).

And to answer the question that you asked Joe: From the looks of it, the Palomino TDP will be roughly equal to the PIII TDP. Or, rather, the maximum dissipation will be roughly equal. I'm not sure how much Intel's and AMD's method of calculating TDP will differ (I've seen a BoTE calculation showing that Intel "fudges" its TDP by roughly 20% for the P4 - that is, the TDP is 20% below Pmax (which Intel does not supply), whereas AMD lists the Pmax as the TDP - however, that was for desktops - the mobile calculations of TDP with SpeedStep and PowerNow! entering into the picture will surely muddle things).
