Ahhhh, you have found the key. You see the analysts don`t own the stock they are touting. Or buying the stock they are down grading. So they can`t profit Directly from their upgrades/downgrades

But don't ya know that by and large, the companies they work for DO own the stock, trade the stock, make money on the tout's call, and, yes Virginia, even influence the nature and timing of the call. The evidence of this, albeit mainly anecdotal, is overwhelming. They really are "pure as the driven slush".

Now if these damn leg cramps will go away, I'll go back to sleep.

OK I think I got it.

So if I think a stock is GREAT but am not willing to put up any money behind my thoughts I'm fine.

BUT if I think a stock is WONDERFUL and actually buy it and mention a price target I'm toast.

robert.
but remember analyst such as goldman sachs
do put there clients in stocks before upgrades
and do warn pre of downgrades and though they do not
profit from stock ownership, there commissions on 50k tickets
are greatly increased by having there clients make more money through there upgrades or downgrades...
