wa hoo,

This does not answer your question on Canadian producers. It is a link to Smart Money and their list of SFD competitors. I am thinking Poultry & Fish. With mad cow, the sheep slaughtered in New England this week, and the hoof and mouth publicity (even if it is in Europe), many will shift to poultry and fish.

Still looking for more.

wa hoo,

here are some company symbols from the Meat Products Industry off of MSN Money Central. SFD is in their list. Checked some of these out - no other major pork producer, but does have some poultry producers.

FWIW

BRID,HRL,IBP,IBA,CHX,PZA,RCF,SAFM,SEB,SFD,TSN

TSN (Tyson Foods) is buying IBP. Here is company report off of MSN

Tyson Foods, Inc.

When it comes to pressing its advantage as the nation's #1 poultry producer, Tyson Foods is no chicken. Tyson breeds, processes, and markets chickens and Cornish game hens (although chicken accounts for most of its sales). It also produces tortillas and chips (Mexican Original) and feeds. Tyson sells its products in more than 60 countries, with food service customers accounting for nearly half of sales. Having emerged as the winner in a bidding war with Smithfield Foods, Tyson is buying IBP, Inc.(#1 beef processor, and #2 pork processor in the US). Once the deal is final, Tyson will dominate the US meat industry. Senior chairman Don Tyson, son of the founder, controls nearly 90% of the company's voting power.

Happy hunting - hope you share with us any you run across not on this list.
