G,

I am not sure this is the case. Dollar for dollar, a laptop is much more expensive than a desktop. I would consider a laptop as a 2nd or 3rd computer, but would never place one on my desk since whatever price point I was looking at in laptops would be about twice that of a comparable desktop system. Part of the problem lies in the expensive TFT screens. Perhaps in another 5 or 10 years there will be parity between the price and performance of the two, although I would not bet on it.

Gottfried,

My desk top is powered down 90% of the time and the note book saves $50-100 in electricity per year.

That's a great investment. You will recoup maybe 30% of approx. $1,000 premium that you had to pay upfront, in cash, and it will take you 3 year to recover it. During this period of time, you will be suffering with lousy keyboard, mouse and screen.
