milo:

"Lam said that as Intel's gross margin falls (Intel expects a sequential decline from 63% to 51% in the first quarter), the Pentium 4 discounts are
taking a significant toll on profits."

If sequentially, INTC's gross margins decline by 12 points, there is no way INTC's Q1 is even close to $0.20...I'm beginning to think that Mr. Barrett really is seeing red!!!

From the EBNews article: ebnews.com

Intel is on a fast-track 0.13-micron ramp, retrofitting two existing but unidentified fabs, which next quarter are expected to start producing a 1.26GHz Pentium III processor code-named Tualatin. Other fabs will be upgraded to start Pentium 4 Northwood production late in the year.

This would seem to be an indication that Intel is going with their traditional "Copy Exact" again, no? Try it out in a couple of fabs first, then copy to all the others.

Milo,

thanks for the article! The general impression I've got from reading it is that Intel is VERY much feeling the heat. It is now Intel who has to make big efforts in order to stay competitive.

It is the Pentium 4 which has to attack the Athlon, not the other way round. This was very clearly expressed in the article.

Definitely, a good read!

Peter
