Hi jpgill! Thanks for the article. Good reading. Appreciate you posting it. Hope you're having a great weekend.

You mentioned adversity. Along those lines and my prior post, I was thinking about adversity the other day when one of my close friends said that he didn't understand how I could keep such a positive attitude in this market. I did a little sole searching and told him that I really believe it had to do with confidence, that I had an overwhelming degree of confidence in myself that I will not fail. Throwing in the towel is not an option. I've written some of my views on the Porch before about that as you know.

Then I got to thinking about how I felt when I did prevail after rebounding from great odds against me, whether it be in a business situation, or an investment, whatever. My wife sort of chuckled and said, "I can tell you. You thrive on overcoming. It's exhilarating to you." I told her that I wasn't sure about that but I knew not to argue because she's usually right with those kinds of things.

Reminds me of a time years ago when I was at a pivotal point in my business career, which at that time was on a great fast track up the corporate ladder. After weeks of talking about it with my wife, I made a huge decision about the direction our lives would take. Had to do with whether I would continue in the business world, move overseas, or go out on my own.

Anyway, the night I made the decision, I recall overhearing my wife talking to one of our young sons while putting him in bed. Although quite young, he understood it was a very serious matter, probably from listening to the many discussions my wife and I had for weeks leading up to this point. He was was afraid about what was going to happen next and asked if I was afraid. My wife bent over in bed, kissed him, and said "I've never known your daddy to be afraid of anything. He will not let us down. He will not fail." I can remember that like it was yesterday. I never told my wife I heard her say it. It had a profound impact on me.

The challenge of overcoming adversity is exhilarating to me. It probably starts with that cocky attitude of mine about not accepting defeat, and always striving for excellence every day. It is challenging to me to work long hours, weeks, or months if that's what it takes, on a project, an investment, whatever, with the notion of how good it will feel when I'm finished and achieve the results desired. That's powerful motivation to me.

The exhilaration you get when you know you've done your very best.
The exhilaration you get when you know you've worked hard and it paid off.
The exhilaration you get when you know you've won.
The exhilaration you get when you know you deserve it.

Just pondering on this late Saturday afternoon...
