Ted,

FWIW, I was watching the Discovery Channel last night -- a show about the mammoths, sabertooths, etc. -- and they said that there was an extinction approx. 11,000 years ago where all of these animals died out in the space of 200 years, corresponding with an increase of the daily temperature of 11 degrees fahrenheit (not sure if that was over the period, or a quick jolt). The majority of feeding grasses died off, resulting in a massive loss of feeding areas.

Again, FWIW.
