IBM's ThinkPad TransNote Named Best New Portable Computer Jump to first matched term
WASHINGTON DC. -- (INTERNET WIRE) -- 23-03-2001 -- Leaders in the government IT community this week selected the new IBM ThinkPad TransNote the best new portable computer technology -- earning a Government Computer News "Best New Technology" award at the sixth annual Government Computer News FOSE 2001 trade show and conference. Four other IBM products--the IBM-LAN PC Card 128, the IBM T84H Monitor, the IBM NetVista A60 and the IBM eServer x330 -- were recognized as leaders in their categories. IBM was selected over more than 200 competing manufacturers for the coveted awards, presented annually by GCN at FOSE. Beating competitors such as Dell, Compaq and Hewlett-Packard in a total of 11 separate categories, the IBM products were cited for their innovation, usability and value.
"IBM is honored to have won this prestigious award from Government Computer News and to also have had the distinction of being the manufacturer with the most products as finalists," said Rick McGee, vice president, mobile brand marketing, IBM Personal Computing Division. "The readers of Government Computer News represent all walks of government life -- and the FOSE awards validate IBM's success in anticipating the public sector's needs."
FOSE is the largest government information technology show in the world. A panel of 12 GCN editors judged the entries, evaluating each product for its innovation, value and importance to the federal market.

IBM ThinkPad TransNote Portfolio Notebook Computer: Winner, Best Portable Computer Category
Introduced on February 20, 2001, IBM's new ThinkPad TransNote is the first notebook computer to integrate electronic and paper based information. Designed for highly mobile users within paper-intensive organizations, the TransNote combines multiple ways to input and retrieve information including handwriting, a touch screen and a keyboard, all in a uniquely designed mobile computer. The integrated ThinkScribe digital notepad, digital pen and Ink Manager Pro software capture handwritten ideas and notes on regular paper pads, saves them automatically and transfers them to the computer, where they can be managed, organized and searched. The TransNote can be used to share handwritten information via e-mail, word processing documents and presentations. With software customization, the TransNote can also capture forms based information and integrate it into existing applications. Powered by an Intel Pentium III processor and starting at a list price of $2,999, the ThinkPad TransNote represents a new category in mobile computing-portfolio notebook computing.
IBM -- High Rate Wireless LAN PC Card 128: Finalist, Best Wireless Device Category
IBM's High Rate Wireless LAN PC Card 128, introduced December 19, 2000, is designed to enable the "next generation" of wireless connectivity with user authentication and both 64 and 128-bit data encryption for even greater security than previous generation issues. It is ideal for large enterprise mobile workers that need to maintain network connectivity while on the move or any business or organization that would benefit from networking but finds the wiring costs and inflexibility associated with wired LAN infrastructures to be unattractive. Additionally, the product is compliant with both IEEE 802.11b wireless standard and Wi-Fi, giving individuals greater flexibility to choose the standard that best suits their work environment. The product, complete with a three-year warranty, has a suggested retail price of $199. IBM Special Bids personnel determine actual pricing for large customers such as government agencies.
IBM NetVista* A60 Best Desktop Computer Category-Finalist
IBM's NetVista A60 desktop computer was introduced November 21, 2000, along with its sister product for consumers, the NetVista A60i. This marked the expansion of IBM's NetVista family of products into the high-end performance category. Defining cutting-edge power and performance, the IBM NetVista A60 is the industry's first general-purpose desktop for businesses and organizations that incorporates Intel's Pentium 4 processor. The NetVista A60 is capable of reaching speeds of up to 1.5 GHz, while also boasting 128 MB of RDRAM, hard drives up to 80 gigabytes, and numerous video cards and multimedia features that leverage the capabilities of the Pentium 4 processor. With a starting price of $1,449 (without monitor), the NetVista A60 provides a powerful combination of innovation, performance, usability and value, suiting the needs of leading-edge users in organizations ranging from large-enterprises to small departments.
IBM T84H Monitor Best Presentation Hardware-Finalist
IBM's T84H "Hybrid" Flat Panel Monitor is a high-resolution monitor geared for advanced graphic intensive applications such as desktop publishing, CAD/CAM and digital content creation. The T84H monitor combines a bright 18.1-inch viewable image and 1280x1024 resolution with a space-saving design. The power-efficient, compact design of the T84H features a large viewable image area and the ability to switch from a digital interface to an analog interface, which extends the life cycle of flat panel monitors. Additionally, the T84H includes a detachable base with adjustments for tilt and swivel. The T84H monitor starts at $2699.
IBM eServer x330: Finalist, Best Server Products Category
The eServer xSeries is IBM's line of Intel-based servers that enable customers to confidently run their e-businesses. xSeries incorporates the latest mainframe-derived technologies to provide highly scalable servers for multiple operating environments. The IBM eServer x330, introduced in November of 2000, is a second-generation 1U thin server (1U = 1.75" high), and incorporates a revolutionary IBM innovation called Cable Chaining Technology (C2T). IBM C2T allows 42 1U eServer x330's to be "daisy-chained" together with each server connected to the one above and below it with a single digital cable, thus replacing 53 cables 282 connectors and 6 KVM switches per server rack. The IBM eServer x330 is also the only 1U server with an Advanced Server Processor on the system board of each server. The x330 is available beginning at $2,276.
IBM has supported the FOSE awards and conference show as an exhibitor for many years. This is the second year in a row that an IBM ThinkPad has won for best new technology in the portable computing category. Some of the past Best New Technology winners from IBM include the Avid XpressDV-IBM IntelliStation M Pro, the Netfinity 7000 M10 and the ThinkPad 600X in the best technical-user, best enterprise server and best portable computer categories respectively.
