You've made an excellent point. Yes, as paycheques pass from one set of hands to another, tracing the route back to the source finally leads to the customer.

What I wasn't thinking about when I made the original post was the firm disregarding their own customers' interests, but firms putting their employees in the media spotlight where they give 'advice' for free. But even here, where the interest of small potatoes clients divert from those of a larger active and highly profitable account, I believe most firms would put profit considerations ahead of any ethical issues.

Perhaps the solution, in a perfect world, would be having investment professionals answerable to their profession first and their firm second. Using your Lawyer example, it would be like Lawyers fearing disciplinary actions of the Bar far more than facing an irritated boss.

Thank-you for drawing our attention to this matter. Your point about the customers paying for a service they're not getting is valid, and should be a concern of all investors.

Cheers, PW.
