Charley, The Israelis, many of whom are European Ashkenazi jews, have always yearned to have Israel strongly connected to their former home countries. For that reason alone, they like to think of themselves as European.

However the Sephardic (Ibero-Jewish), and Native Israelis (Sabras) generally find their ties to be stronger to the middle eastern culture.

So this discussion is not particularly new, and few can see where Europe stands to gain anything by upsetting the Arabs (and their precious oil supplies) by bringing the Jews into the EU. It certainly would not go over well with the Turks who have ALSO been trying to gain entre to the European markets and are just as secular as the Israelis.

What is going to be interesting is to see how Europe weathers this hoof and mouth debacle. I think many see a potential breakdown in European unity over the potential destruction that can occur to their agricultural economy, and they will blame it squarely upon British shoulders.

Regards,

Ron
