Bill: LOL -- Ships and fish? Gosh Bill, you really don't know anything about the world out there -- do you? The US is running a trade deficit which last year was minus $330 billion and this year is expected to be about minus $400 billion. The Japanese sell us around plus $60 billion per year more than we sell to them -- and it is not fish and ships (that is hilarious!). The Japanese export plus $100 billion more to the world than they import -- and once again Bill, it ain't fish and ships -- you really crack me up with your "knowledge" of the world economy. The Japanese have invested aggressively in Asia and now export an increasing range of high tech products out of other countries and into the US -- that is not counted in the numbers quoted above. As far as I know, the Japanese eat most of the fish they catch, although some of it no doubt ends up in the L.A. fish market. I was in the Tokyo fish market last week -- I should have asked them if the Japanese trade surplus was mainly in fish -- hey, we all need a good laugh once in a while. dismal.com
