I was going to make the same point about engineering education. But I didn't, because I don't think it is the fault of the education system. I believe that there is not more participation in engineering classes because of the American cultural attitude towards engineers. In a nutshell, kids are taught that 'engineers are nerds'.

Engineering is not seen as a 'cool' profession to go into by most of our youth. Our culture regularly depicts engineers as nerdy, anti-social, and 'out of it'. This social barrier to entry has more to do with it than our educational system. Until we stop depicting engineers as social outcasts, your observation will hold true.

Thanks for letting me get that off my chest. Even my wife calls me a nerd.
