Thanks, OLD MARDY. I needed that.

At first blush, I recalled the architecture used by BT's first competitor in London during the Eighties. It was Mercury Telecommunications, and they first penetrated the local markets through the use of water and gas pipes that were going from the streets into residences and commercial buildings. Only the pipes they used were abandoned ones, replaced by newer utility mains that were installed after the war.

It's interesting to see that Red Herring has so much time on its hands, btw.
