THE WATSONYOUTH, <<<I'm no gamer but I have at least skimmed through most of the reviews. I came to the exact same conclusion. This premise that P4 dominates in gaming is totally unfounded. Perhaps things will change in the future, but they certainly do not "dominate" currently.>>>

IMO the P4 was not designed to optimise current games and applications. There are many things you could do to optimise current software without designing a new chip for it.

You could rewrite the software to begin with that could make it more efficient. I'll bet almost any software engineers who already know the software for the particular application could rewrite the programs and get at least 25-50% percent efficiency improvement - just by taking out the stupid stuff.

Compilers could be rewritten optimised for current operating systems and existing programs could be recompiled. It wouldn't surprise me that some programs are improved several times over.

And, of course, all applications could be rewritten in assembler language and most applications would fly.

No one that I know of is in any rush to do anything drastic to make existing programs run faster.

That is not what computing is all about. It is about going forward - developing newer stuff and pushing the limits of the technology envelope.

The backward looking benchmarking of legacy systems is a red herring.

I respect a lot of the engineers on this thread for their technical knowledge. But I lose a lot of respect for them when they use their knowledge in some bogus manner.
