Some dot com companies are actually making money, by which I mean positive earnings per share, as well as positive growth in earnings per share, e.g. eBay, AOL.

The difference between these companies and the other ones is that they aren't giving stuff away for free. Every time you use them you have to pay them.

One of the things I am wondering is whether catalogue type businesses make enough revenue from their online businesses to offset the overhead. I don't have any problem buying stuff online if it's something I don't need to see to buy, and the price is right, e.g., just bought several months supply of pantyhose from Hanes online. If you buy in quantity the price is very right.

They have a catalogue type business like Land's End and Vermont Country Store - the online version is pretty much the same as the catalogue that they mass mail. So I am doing business with someone I already trust.
