According to a survey by GfK Japan Ltd., an information service company dealing with POS data collected from 3,200 volume retailers of household electric appliances, PC sales in the first week of March (Feb. 26-March 4, 2001) increased 13.1 percent in volume and 12.7 percent in value. The average retail price decreased 767 yen from the previous week's 191,932 yen to 191,165 yen. (123.82 yen = US$1) However, in comparison with the same week last year (Feb. 28-March 5, 2000) the sales decreased 1.9 percent in units. They also decreased 6.2 percent in value. Following major PC manufacturers, Compaq Computer KK, Toshiba Corp., Sharp Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd. launched new PC products from the end of February to the beginning of March 2001. PC sales are expected to move upward gradually as graduation ceremonies and back-to-school events draw near in Japan.
