U.S. GlobiTech to Build CMOS Epitaxial-Wafer Factory in Taiwan
March 26, 2001 (TAIPEI) -- GlobiTech Inc. of the United States and three Taiwanese enterprises will jointly invest NT$3.6 billion (US$11.25 million) to start building a factory in Tainan this July to produce complementary metal-oxide semiconductor epitaxial wafers.

GlobiTech is the world's first CMOS epitaxial wafer foundry providing a portfolio of products for distribution to the semiconductor industry worldwide. Its three Taiwanese partners are Orient Semiconductor Electronics Ltd., Delta Electronics Inc., and Industrial Bank of Taiwan.

The planned venture, christened GlobiTech Taiwan, will produce epitaxial wafers for use in eight-inch fabs and 12-inch fabs. The first stage of the factory construction is projected to be completed in mid-2003, at which time the factory is planned to have turnover of NT$5 billion (US$156.25 million). Upon completion, the factory will have a monthly output capacity of 15,000 eight-inch epitaxial wafers and 3,680 12-inch epitaxial wafers.

The factory is expected to completely fill the needs of the silicon-wafer materials by Taiwan's chip-making factories. Although many chipmakers at home have put on hold investments in eight-inch fabs, the domestic demand for CMOS epitaxial wafers will reach three million pieces a year over the next five years. Besides, many of the island's chipmakers are still building 12-inch fabs.

Local industry experts estimate that at least 24 12-inch fabs will begin operation at the end of 2003, boosting demand of CMOS epitaxial wafers to 31 percent of the world's silicon-wafer material market, up from last year's 23 percent.

The preparatory office of GlobiTech Taiwan submitted an application to lease four hectares of land for the factory site to the administration of the Tainan Science-based Industrial Park on March 20. The park administration said that the wafer-material investment will give a boost to the development of Taiwan's 12-inch wafer material industry and chip-making industry, and reduce local dependence on the foreign supply of the material.
