I just saw some SPECFP2000 scores for Intel's next P4 release and although I can't reveal what I saw I can say that the Alpha will no longer be the highest performance FP processor on the planet.

Thought you'd like to know...

fin,

What changes do you think would be required to keep the P4 competitive once the SSE2 optimized K8 / Hammer processors are on the scene???

Assuming that no substantial architectural changes take place, I think what P4 needs to have an edge of at least 50% to 100% in clock speed to be decisively superior to current Athlon. If Intel can do that, all the second guessing will go away.

Now when you start talking architectural changes, you have to take into account the changes that current K7 cores will have in Palomino and T.bred, and compare them relative to each other.

As far as K8, so little is known publicly, that there is no point even speculating. My guess is that AMD will present it at this year MDR forum. And by then, we should have some info of what changes went into Northwood, and how effective the changes were.
