Fed's Santomero: Growth 'Quite Slow'

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Philadelphia Federal Reserve President Anthony
Santomero said on Monday that U.S. economic data were showing a
mixed picture, with first quarter 2001 growth "quite slow."

"We're observing a mixed picture in economic activity. GDP (gross
domestic product) growth slowed in the fourth quarter of 2000 and was
quite slow in the first quarter of 2001," said Santomero, who currently is
not a voting member of the Fed's policy-setting Federal Open Market
Committee.

The economy grew by 1.1 percent in the fourth quarter of last year.

Prices in commodity and labor markets suggest that "inflation pressures
have abated substantially," Santomero said in response to a question
following an address at the Downtown Economists Club in New York.

The Fed last week cut short-term interest rates by half a percentage point
for the third time this year, bringing federal funds rate on overnight bank
borrowings to 5.00 percent, and it indicated that more cuts are to come.
