BILTHOVEN, the Netherlands -- Semiconductor equipment supplier ASM International N.V. here today (March 26) lowered its outlook for 2001, saying it no longer expects sales and earnings to be equal to last year's results because of a market slowdown.

The company, which supplies a range of systems for wafer fabs and backend assembly plants, said there is no clear sign of a recovery in the capital equipment markets. ASM International said it now anticipates sales dropping 20% from 2000--about the industry's consensus.

Like many other production systems suppliers, the Dutch company said it was implementing a hiring freeze and scrutinizing capital spending programs as well as cutting other expenditures.
