At a recent event hosted by Dataquest late last year, the market research organization projected that the worldwide handset market would grow from 412 million in terms of unit shipments in 2000, to 576 million in 2001. Now, Dataquest has slashed the forecast, saying that sales are projected to exceed 506.5 million units in 2001, a 23% increase over 2000. The growth rate is slower than in 2000, when worldwide mobile phone sales were up 38% over 1999. The market is expected to continue to have steady growth through 2005, when worldwide mobile phone sales will reach almost 740 million units, according to Dataquest. At present, though, the market is in flux. "The market is in a curious situation," said Peter Richardson, who tracks the market for Dataquest. "High levels of stock carried over from year 2000 are depressing new sales from manufacturers in the first quarter, but sales out of the channel in Europe and Asia/Pacific remain strong, underlining our belief that annual sales of more than 500 million units are still possible," he said. Western Europe was the largest region in terms of handset sales in 2000, but Asia/Pacific and Japan are projected to be the world's biggest consumer of these products. The Asia/Pacific and Japan region in total will reach 169.6 million units in 2001, a 31% increase over 2000, Dataquest said. Western Europe is projected to reach 166.6 million units in 2001, a 19% increase over 2000, they said. North America will be the third largest region for mobile phone sales in 2001, as shipments are forecast to reach 90.1 million units, an 18% increase over 2000, they said Latin America will grow 17% in 2001, with sales expected to top 42 million units. The rest of Europe, Middle East and Africa is on pace to have sales total 38.2 million units, up 23% from 2000. The Asia/Pacific and Japan region will continue to lead worldwide sales in 2005, when shipments are projected to reach 280 million units. Western Europe will remain the No. 2 region with sales of 207 million units in 2005. Jim
