And, when you also need to use off the shelf software, to have to have specialized graphics and network processors is not something that CIO's would like to get involved in.

Every PC sold today has a highly specialized graphics processor. Much of the functionality previously supported by the CPU is now inside the graphics processor (i.e. geometry and lighting.) This trend will continue as transistors become cheaper.

The same trend is starting for network processors, which are still in their infancy.
