Tim: If it is a totally new core thre is a bit more risk but also the oportunity for a big performance increase. Beyond what the Athlon core will be able to reach in 2002.

Every now and then (today being one of those times) a rumor surfaces that the Palomino will have a reworked pipeline (i.e. more stages). I don't think AMD will do anything so drastic for the Palomino, and I sincerely hope they don't. There are plenty of other things that can be done to improve the Athlons performance. With the Hammer, however, we will almost certainly see a longer pipeline. I'm not sure if it has been said directly, but AMD has hinted very strongly at it.
