Hutchison Whampoa, Cheung Kong to invest US$1B-plus in mainland

(26 March 2001) In what might be taken as a resounding vote of confidence during global economic doldrums, Li Ka-shing, founder of Cheung Kong (Holdings) Ltd. (CK) and chairman of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd. (HW), has announced planned investments on the mainland of approximately HK$10 billion (US$1.28 billion).

CK and HW first began investing in mainland opportunities several years ago, Li said. The two companies already have combined investments of more than HK$60 billion (US$7.69 billion) in mainland businesses, mostly to do with real estate, reported the March 23 Zhongguo Xinwen She (China News Service).

Li stressed that Hong Kong is his home as well as CK and HW’s investment base, adding that his firms will continue to take advantage of attractive investment projects in Hong Kong as they present themselves.

He also said that he has established residency in Singapore and expressed confidence in the real estate businesses there. Earlier, his company won the bid on some property in Singapore, upon which it has plans to build premium residences. Li did not rule out possible collaboration with other financial groups to develop real estate ventures in Singapore, the story said.
