It is ridiculous to think that the government, and society in general can afford most of the elderly's needs...no society with our demographics has able to afford it in history...... The best solution has always been the private one: Family should support family. It is much more humane, healthier, and cheaper. Hence my problem with American culture. If we had our "act" together, older folks would not have most the concerns that they do now...because they would be aided/comforted/supported by their families...instead of being wards of society or the state.... Also, everyone bears responsibility for themselves. Without knowing your age......it is up to you to save for your older years, etc. Most people can do so if you start early. Common sense tell one (at an early age) that one must do so. Health care: There are some things/treatments/operations that our society can afford, and some that it can not.....no, I do not support super-expensive procedures that can allow someone who's had a full life to live an extra few days, weeks, etc....I wish (as a society) we could afford it, but we can't.... We should have a basic safety net for all...believe it or not, one can have still a decent life $10,000 a year (poverty line)...it is not a glamarous life....one will be restricted in where one can live....but there are some lovely little towns where you can get by on such......yes, maybe one needs a roommate...but I think that is much healthier than living alone.....with today's communication's (cable TV, internet, etc.)...living in a small town does not leave one out-of-touch with society....you can read all you want at the public library....you can use the internet for free....there are lots of free activities in many towns...try a small college town....plenty of groups looking for "volunteer"....life can be very fulfilling still on little money.... For an adventerous sort, $10k will get you an even better standard of living in a small town in Mexico...complete w/maid... Trust fund? I wish.....I grew up lower middle class...and then middle class.....I know hard times.....and I learned from them...
