Look at PC for an initiative of the left, a potential
precursor to effective "thought control" ala "1984".

I had asked Little Joe for examples of leftie initiatives that were gaining traction. George, you've named the perfect example of an extreme leftie initiative, but I don't see any traction.

PC had its heyday five or ten years ago. I think that the "water buffalo" incident marked the beginning of the end of PC. Sure, it's not completely dead yet, but it's on the ropes. It's yesterday's story as far as the mainstream press is concerned--a running joke on sitcoms and in satire pieces. Perhaps all the provinces haven't gotten the message yet, but the avante garde have moved on. The opponents are beating the proverbial dead horse, IMO. Hopefully we've learned a few lessons: 1) that when we label people, it's nicer to use respectful words, 2) thin skin is an unsympathetic handicap, and 3) trying to impose respect through language doesn't work.
