Have you been to Jamestown or Plymouth? The ships that brought the early settlers to the Americas were pathetically small, and lucky to survive a good North Atlantic storm. It's sometimes useful to remind ourselves just how hardy and brave our ancestors were. I will be going to Montana for a visit this summer and in preparation have been reading up on the Lewis and Clark expedition. It was an extraordinary trip of courage and resourcefulness. Make my daily workout in the gym pale into insignificance. The European explorers who penetrated the heart of Africa, whatever you think of them sociologically, were another incredibly hardy breed. Hard to believe that society which whines when the stock market drops 200 points and is devestated when their electricity is turned off for a few hours emerged from this root stock.
