Earthquake Boosts Semiconducter Share Prices

Helped by the rising trend of semiconductors stock in New York share prices of Samsung Electronics, Anam and Hyundai Electronic Industries rose sharply Monday alongside equipment makers. News that plants of NEC and Mitsubishi in Hiroshima were damaged in the recent earthquake led to rumors that a fall in production there would boost the price of individual chips.

Choi Seok-po of Merit Securities said that it is expected that Mitsubishi's non memory chip plant is likely to be out of actions for one month, and NEC which produce 2.5 million synchronous 128M-DRAMs is likely to be out of action for two weeks, propping up prices. The spot price has risen for three consecutive days US$4.3 to US$4.65.

Foreign buyers continued to buy Samsung Electronics stock, purchasing W69.1 billion on Monday.
