Hobbes, with his usual heavy- handedness, defined laughter as an expression of triumph, including in that the superiority felt towards the butt of jokes. He never, of course, explained why often the butt laughs too, or whimsy, or wit, or other forms of humor not dependent on ridicule. Humor seems to be, more than anything else, the delight in play, the play of imagination and of intelligence. Sometimes, in such play, we achieve perspective, which is all to the good........
