There were plenty of whiners in the root stock- they just don't turn up in books about Lewis and Clark. Most people, even then, were not Lewis and Clark. Most people didn't want to go West. In all generations, people who are comfortably off, don't really have the incentive to wander off and do difficult things- unless they have the need for adrenaline rushes- as it appears some people do. In our generation most of us didn't really want to go on the space shuttle. Oh we might say we want to go on it, but we haven't done anything to make it a reality, so we really don't. When they write books in the future will people talk about the "root stock" that went into space in contraptions bolted to fuel that was likely to explode and blow them to bits? Probably. Some things, like nostalgia, never change.
