ZTE Invests in R&D of Mobile Phone

ZTE is employing over 130 communication scientists in its Shanghai Institute, Shenzhen-based ASIC (Application Specific Integrated Circuit) R&D center, CDMA development center in South Korea, and IC design business to develop mobile phones. Big investments ensure its leadership in development of mobile phone.

ZTE goal in development of mobile phone is to develop all needed technologies with intelligent copyright, including hardware and software, ASIC, and appearance design. It’s one of the first mobile phone manufacturers licensed by Ministry of Information Industry (MII, www.mii.gov.cn), and one of a few manufacturers that own key technologies.

ZTE developed application-layer software and RF (radio frequency) circuit for mobile phone in 1999, and later on launched layer 2/3 protocol stacks. This meant that it owned key technologies for mobile phone, and broke a few foreign companies’ monopoly on GSM (Global System for Global Communication) market.

After introduction of ZTE189 dual-frequency Chinese mobile phone, it developed ZTE 289 mobile phone. Its new-developed ZTE389 family mobile phone passed FTA test. Prototype development of ZTE489 mobile phone, with more features and elegant appearance, has been finished, and will be produced in September 2001.

ZTE, header of development of CDMA mobile phone in China, has successfully developed the first detachable CDMA mobile phone in the world. To attract excellent communication engineers to develop CDMA mobile phone, it set up ZTE-FutureTel Co. in South Korea. It will offer its customers ZTE802 CDMA mobile phone in the later half year of 2001.

Its CDMA mobile phone is compatible with IS-95A and most of IS-95B specifications, offering 64-kbps packet data service. Besides, it supports UIM (User Identity Module) to meet some carriers’ specific requirements.

ZTE plans to develop crucial protocols and applications of data communication and mobile Internet this year, and accelerates development of GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) and WAP (Wireless Application Protocol).

ZTE Was Granted a CDMA License

Beijing, China, March 12, 2001 -- Ministry of Information Industry (MII) granted ZTE a license today to sell its detachable CDMA phones. This is the first CDMA phone license granted to a local manufacturer.

Test organization under MII performed a strict test on ZTE802 CDMA phone, including ambient and compatibility test. The test organization tested 655 parameters in November 10 to 29, 2000, and all specifications met its requirements. The phone was put into compatibility test in Beijing, Shanghai, and Xi’an based CDMA mobile communication systems in December 16 to 21, 2000, involving location register, dial-up, wandering, and high- and medium-speed mobility. Furthermore, it passed CDG stage 2 and 3 tests.

ZTE802 CDMA phone was the first detachable phone in the world. It protects carriers’ and customers’ investments. It facilitates launch of new services like e-cash, e-bank, and credit card.

ZTE offers cdma2000 1x Voice Service

After replacing channel cards, ZXC10 CDMA system of ZTE offers cdma2000 1x telephony service, allowing communications among 3G and 2G mobile phones, among 3G mobile phones, and among 3G/2G mobile phones and fixed phones. This is the first CDMA system that offers cdma2000 voice in China.

Cdma2000 broad communication technology is one of the most important 3G mobile communication solutions. Cdma2000 1x, the first phase of cdma2000, supports up to 144-kbps package services, offering at least two times of capability of narrow CDMA (IS-95) system. Besides, it is compatible with the narrow CDMA.

Cdma2000 technology is promising globally. A large cdma2000 network is being built in Korea. The narrow CDMA technology was employed in north America, Korea, Hong Kong, Australia, and other countries and regions, which will be evolved to 3G one by using cdma2000 technology. China Unicom (www.chinaunicom.com) is licensed to set up a nationwide CDMA network which will be also evolved to 3G one by cdma2000 technology. Cdma2000 1x will be widely used all over the world.

The début of the broad CDMA system will increase ZTE’s competitive edges, allowing it to occupy more shares of market in mobile communication.

What is a "detachable phone"? A SIM card?

Re : "NTT DoCoMo ... give the world a glimpse at what the first handsets for 3G (third generation) mobile services are likely to look like."

This reminds me of something that was in Mad magazine (around 35 years ago (!))

In was in a feature : "How boys (men) (at different ages) try to impress the opposite sex.

For the (if I remember correctly) six year old boy, he says to a girl :

"If you are real nice to me, I might let you look at my frog."

(And, he is holding a shoe box).
