What you have in common with Patricia is that you do not know the state of mind of those workers. You only compare it to your milktoast engineer in the suburbs life. Is everyone who does (or makes) what you do automatically happy?

The most miserable year I have had to date was the year that I made the most money. And I have talked to some in positions that you guys feel so sorry for and was pleasantly surprised at their happiness. One particular case with a Mexican laborer working as the cleanup (literally, with a broom) on the crew building houses in my neighborhood. He was extremely happy and a joy to talk with. He explained being from a poor (really poor) section af Mexico and having a great childhood. Now he has worked hard and owns a house with his family in the bay area.

You and Paticia can chalk it up to luck, but I know it was hard work (he said so himself). He was a very proud man who did extremely well for his family. No college, no inheritance, no IPO, no nothing except hard work. I am starting to feel that you form your opinions from guilt associated with the easy lifestyle that "luck" has afforded the both of you.
