recompetition for central power..not in your lifetime
Interesting you say that: I have a co worker who just built her own home with her husband. They are completely self-sufficient, home generator, septic, well, the works. Yet they decided to get hooked up to the central electric company: in their case they did it so they could sell power back, plus get a handout from the state for having their own power supply. But after they did, they said it's good to be hooked up because if they ever wanted to sell the house, buyers would not look kindly upon not being able to access the central.

Also we will be building a home in a year or so and I suggested to my significant other that we do total independence and he said he wanted to be able to access the electric company.
