As I stated in an earlier post, I'm in favor of a non-race based affirmative action. More like a 'need based scholarship program' that reserves a significant number of spots for people who come from truly disadvantaged backgrounds. Not one based on racial quotas or ethnic last names.

Again, the "can't be done" argument is not a good enough reason to not try.

I believe the benefits will be far reaching. People from disadvantaged backgrounds will see their peers 'make it' and have some positive role models, along with a clear path to take. Hope will emerge, and stereotypical attitudes both within and outside of the minority communities will fall away.
