Sorry if I twisted any of your words. Sometimes happens on these running threads.

I would put something else into the formula: starting point. Some people get a better 'starting point' in life; more economic support, more loving and supportive family, etc. Some take advantage of their starting point, others squander theirs. Some work hard to overcome their starting point, others just complain about it.

Another point: isn't intelligence also influenced by luck? Some people are just naturally smarter, quicker, brighter than others. Lucky for them.

Hard work and perserverance are important, and can overcome a lack of natural intelligence (I'm an example of that), luck, and starting point. We definitely should admire those who use hard work and perserverance to overcome the lack of the others. But, we shouldn't assume the others are, as Nadine aptly put it, "shiftless".
