My paternal great- grandparents came from small villages in Latvia, making the classic crossing to Ellis Island. Their children largely settled in the greater Philadelphia area, although my grandparents came down to Washington. My grandfather sold insurance, with occasional forays into small business that never quite panned out. My grandmother ended up selling ladies' coats downtown, a couple of blocks from the White House. About the time my father entered grade school, SS Einsatzgruppen operating in Latvia and Belarus and Ukraine began shooting Jews in the head and shoving them into mass graves.

My maternal grandmother's grandmother came with her husband from England well after the Civil War. They were tenant farmers near the Anacostia River in Washington DC, and later, when she was widowed, my great- great- grandmother ran a boarding house less than ten blocks from the White House. My great- granmother was a hostess at a hotel coffee shop. My grandmother was a low level civilian employee of the Air Force.

My maternal grandfather's parents came from southern Italian, from the countryside near Naples. My grandfather worked construction, then became a shop teacher, then tried various small businesses, never quite finding success.

About the time my mother entered grade school, there was fierce fighting at Anzio, and the Allies were planning to launch an invasion of France across the channel from England.

From my perspective, it is great to be an American every day.......
