Under the plan, Ingram will provide distribution services to retailers of Handspring's electronics gadgets, including the Visor handheld and Springboard expansion modules. Financial details of the non-exclusive pact were not released. Shares of Handspring rose more than 20 percent on Tuesday afternoon, trading at 15-9/16, up 2-3/4, after touching a session high of 16-1/8. Handheld device makers like Handspring, number two in the market after Palm Inc.(NASDAQ:PALM), are targeting the corporate market following several years of rapid growth in the consumer sector. In the so-called enterprise, managers will buy hundreds or thousands of the computers at once, as opposed to individual sales. "We are seeing great demand for our products in corporate America," said Greg Woock, vice president of North American sales for Handspring, in a statement. "Working with Ingram Micro ... we plan to bring on a targeted and proven set of reseller partners that enable us to better serve the needs of these customers." The program will put Handspring devices into sellers who can help tailor the gadgets to the needs of their customers, via software or add-on hardware. A Handspring spokesman said that the pact will add more than 300 value-added resellers, building upon its 26 traditional retailers which includes Staples Inc. (NASDAQ:SPLS) and Amazon.com Inc.(NASDAQ:AMZN). Copyright 2001, Reuters News Service
