Scumbria: I have long believed that processing should be distributed among special purpose processors. The evolution of graphics processors is a good indication of the success of this approach.

My suggestion and your philosophy aren't necessarily mutually exclusive. Adding fp math capabilities to the CPU could be seen as substituting in a dedicated processor instead of letting the CPU do work it wasn't really designed to do. Similarly, adding a DSP processor to a present-day PC would allow it to handle all the audio and video related tasks that the CPU is currently tasked with (but not designed for).

(of course, it would also make a number of DSP-type processors already in a modern CPU redundant)
