I don't think I would be willing to spend additional $100 to add general purpose DSP to my computer.

The price of a mass-produced GP DSP capable of e.g. mpeg compression runs less than a tenth of that. Additionally, you already have several DSP-type chips in your system (e.g. sound and networking). Consolidating these into one general purpose DSP might make a lot of sense. You could actually get good quality on-board sound, broadband / ethernet, along with the real-time mpeg (de)compression.
