I'm saying if design, or consciousness, or intention, is involved in the process, its agent isn't beneficent and doesn't deserve worship.

If it's not a consciousness, but merely a "systemic process," then "beneficence" is meaningless as a characteristic of the process, but can, of course, be descriptively stipulated by observers (those who like feeling all sentimental) as the way contemplating the beauty, oh the beauty, makes them feel. "It's all so... beneficent!"

The latter choice is a way to give a Get Out Of Jail Free card to an evidently rather off-hand, distracted deity -- after all It didn't "superintend" the cruelty, the injustice, the pain, the awful, awful sadness in the Darwinian world that is.
