9:44pm 03/27/01 China Unicom plans $2.4 bln CDMA network (CHU, QCOM) By Bill Clifford
China Unicom Group, the mainland's No. 2 wireless provider, is set to unveil detailed plans Wednesday to build a nationwide CDMA mobile-phone network and invite companies to bid for an estimated $2.42 billion in contracts, the Asian Wall Street Journal reported. The move is expected to bring San Diego-based Qualcomm (QCOM) closer than ever to cracking the China market. State-owned Unicom will officially outline the network specs for the first time to foreign and domestic equipment makers at a meeting in Beijing, the AWSJ said, citing executives at three companies who will attend. New York-listed ADRs of Unicom fell 4.2 percent to end Tuesday at $11.21, off 49 cents.
