i agree in theory to your logic however america has turned into a service economy and if manufacturing has gone to asia and mexico and other jobs become outsourced to foreign countries then what will americans do...of course there will always be jobs but jobs will be lost net
right now in this bubble we have survived on an asset bubble and thrived on selling stuff to each other..but things are going in reverse now...
i agree in a perfect efficient world we would reallocate our resources efficiently but as evidenced by layoffs there is a lot of fat to trim....
the loss in the manafacturing sector jobs have been sucked up by the service economy...here in orlando notably the tourist sector but now disney is warning of job cuts and tourism and a lot of other service economy sectors that have boomed by an asset bubble will lose jobs..tourism, brokers, analysts, real estate bubble, best buy employees, internet firms etc...lots of nonessential things/stores/services out there to be cut...sure it enhances our stadard of living but it only worked in a bubble economy with everyone living beyond their means

<The loss of a particular job to an overseas location is no more, and actually less of a problem than if the entire plant moved across the country to a new state. In addition, the outsourcing of a given job function to a lower cost region will increase the job security of all the remaining workers in a company. >

Well, said... interestingly the above spotlights the fractured system about which you speak. The interests of this country as represented by our government are at odds with the above system. IMO the coming downturn will highlight these differences in a big way.
