<<TED TURNER LASHES OUT AT 'BOUGHT AND PAID FOR' BUSH
DRUDGE REPORT
Wed Mar 28 13:11:06 2001

AOLTIMEWARNER exec and CNN founder Ted Turner said Tuesday in Chattanooga that the election of George Bush is "a personal blow to environmentalists."

MORE

Turner said the president "was bought and paid for by the petroleum industry" and that "the Republican Party has become the party of polluters."

He made the remarks at McCallie School in an informal seminar with nine students chosen for their environmental interest and service work, the Chattanooga TIMES FREE PRESS reported.

Mr. Turner, 62, and a member of the McCallie Class of 1956, said he considered the presidential election results "to be a disaster'' and that the proposal to open protected land in Alaska to oil drilling "is ridiculous.

"We should be moving away from fossil fuels," Turner said."He is trying to steer the country by looking in the rearview mirror."

NUKES TOP DANGER

Turner warned the students of nuclear annihilation.

"It is the most dangerous threat humanity faces," he said. "The United States and Russia still have about 4,000 missiles on hair-trigger alert. Because of Russia's bad economic situation, the controls on those missiles have deteriorated. There is a real chance for an accident. They could see a flock of birds coming on faulty radar and think missiles were being fired. You could basically end humanity in one afternoon."

TOO MANY PEOPLE

After the threat of nuclear annihilation, the next most important survival issue is overpopulation, Turner told the class.

"You have to limit the population, or it will be limited for us through survival of the fittest," Turner said. "I don't like abortion, but I am a strong believer in planned parenthood. The one-child population program in China was absolutely necessary. Without it, there would be 300 million more Chinese."
